Mythology.... History.... Mykonos today

Mythology

I believe that it must have been more than 3.000 years before, when gods were fighting each other for power and strength, battles up in the skies or down to the deep seas, from the top of mount Olympus to the dark caves of Ades, battles in which the winner takes it all......

.......It was a battle like this....and it was strong....Zeus send his thunders against the Giants and they, on return threw some huge heavy rocks....Hercules who was fighting on his father side, lifted these heavy granite rocks against the Giants and buried them underneath...and that's how Mykonos and Delos islands have been born....from gods !!!!!!

And through the ages these small islands are blessed with the most beautiful sunsets in the world, lace beaches with crystal blue waters and clear blue sunlit skies.

The locals in return offer their hospitality to the travelers, their pure hearts and a smile with a glass of ouzo and some meze, a unique way of having fun, so Mykonos island was, is and will be the elite of gods......till the end of times......

History

Archaeologists traced unquestioned facts that the island of Mykonos was first inhabited around 3000B.C.

The island was named after a legendary hero Mykono, son of the king of Delos Anio ,who was the son of god Apollo and the nymph Roe, daughter of god Dionysus.

In ancient coins and scripts we see the figure of god Dionysus, who was the protector of the island.

Mykonos always had strong bonds with Delos island. Very enlightening is an ancient script from 200B.C in which there is a description of worship ceremonies and sacrifices at the temple of Apollo.

During the greek-macedonian period with Alexander the Great and later at the roman period with August Caesar , Mykonos kept autonomy even after Delos was destroyed. As the years passed conquers from all around the world set foot in Mykonos. Francs, crusaders, Venetians, Catalans, Turks and pirates. From 1700 Mykonians started to built a large navy which had played a major role in the war for Greek independence from Turks in 1821, when a Mykonian heroine Manto Mavrogenous gave all her fortune and ships to help the liberation of Greece. To honor her Mykonians placed her statue in the central square of Mykonos town

During the World War I and II, Mykonos collapsed economically. The dry rocky land didn't offer much and the intercourse with the mainland and the other islands was difficult, so at that time, Mykonians were scourged with hunger and poverty.

After 1945 Mykonos finds prosperity when tourism is starting to develop and year by year becomes world wide known as one of the best vacation resorts.

Mykonos today

Mykonos, the island of Aegean Archipelagos , belongs to the group of Cyclades, fitful shaped, covers an area of 87 km2 and longitude of shores 81,5 km. The land is rocky and infertile with small hills. Underground there are species of minerals but the economy of Mykonos rely mostly on tourism.

The touristic activity is obliged to the small distance from Delos island -one of the most important centers of ancient greek civilization-, to the characteristic Cycladic architecture of the white washed houses, to the small churches -which count up to 650-, to the small helical alleys, to the picturesque windmills and to the beautiful lace beaches

Places worth seeing are the small churches on the island, which are offerings from the old sailors, with most important the church of Panagia Paraportiani built on the edge of the harbor. This church consists of four smaller chapels rolled into one, at four different levels which are orientated to the four signs of horizon.

In the town of Mykonos, the windmills dominate. They are located to the south of Mykonos town near Little Venice. Bonis windmill functions as a museum, every afternoon opens the wings which turn with the wind, the miller takes the wheat and produces flour like the old times...a procedure you must not miss. Bonis windmill is situated on the main road of Mykonos. Little Venice is an exceptional sightseeing. Visit the small cafes, have a glass of ouzo -the national drink of Greece-,and view the fabulous sunset.

At the community of Ano Mera -the main village of Mykonos- visit the monastery of Panagia Tourliani. Built in the 17th century, with magnificent technique wood carvings, created in Florence in 1775. You will also admire the carved stone bell tower, and the rest places of the monastery including the two museums you will find inside. One Ecclesiastical, which houses the beautiful Epitaphios of Agia Eleni and one Agricultural which has a big collection of farming tools.

Wondering around the colorful small alleys of Mykonos town, you will meet the traditional mykonian donkey with the baskets full with delights on the side. Do not hesitate and buy some fresh fruits and vegetables, cultivated in mykonian gardens, and smell the sweet scented basil and carnations!!

While having a cup of coffee before or after the beach, search and try to find Petros, the pelican who is the mascot of Mykonos island, along with his "bride" Irini, take some photos with them, while eating and stuff their bellies with fresh fish!!!

What could someone say about night life and entertainment in Mykonos island!! How many first pages and articles have been dedicated by greek and international press! Sometimes encomiastic and sometimes with a tendency of  snobbism. No matter what, one thing is certain. With greek ethnic music with bouzouki and dance, western music, rock, pop, classic, latin, progressive or mainstream house, trance, usually played by international famous dj's like Tiesto !!!! Morales, Pippi of Ibiza, Gareth Cooke uk, as well as known greek dj's like Ms Lefki, Pistol+Gogos, Akylla, Antonio XL and many more, it will be guaranteed  that the music you will choose to have fun with, will be unique! Because the truth is only one. Like everything else in Mykonos, night entertainment appeals to everybody's taste and it is.............. UN-FOR-GE-TA-BLE!!!
Mykonos is well known for the beautiful lace beaches and the sparkling crystal clear blue waters. Mykonos offers beaches for every person and taste, even for the most picky ones. There are sandy beaches, pebbly beaches, with rocks for the lovers of under water fishing, crowded beaches with all day parties, isolated beaches for the lonely ones....We're certain that everyone who visits Mykonos will be very satisfied.....
